DRY WEATHER BELFRY CHECKS

DRY WEATHER BELFRY CHECKS

You may recall the end of Summer 2022 when there was an extended period of very dry weather. There were some unusual problems in belfries where woodwork became exceptionally dry and there were problems with things coming loose. The present dry period over much of the ODG might see a return to some of these issues. I repeat below, the advice we gave then. You might like to check that all is OK in your belfry, especially as the dry weather is forecast for at least another week, certainly in some areas.

“- whether you have a wooden or steel bellframe; stays, wheels and occasionally other bell gear are being found loose and close to falling apart in some cases. These must be tightened and made safe immediately.

– particularly in the case of stays, you might consider using “nylock” nuts or conventional paired lock-nuts to avoid the risk of gear coming apart.

– wooden bell frames, headstocks and bearing fixings are found to be coming loose as the wood dries out. This may be apparent from the “go” of the bells or may be heard as knocking. The bolts should be tightened immediately. In the case of frame bolts, we do not recommend loosening them again once the weather turns and if they are not tightened too hard, the subsequent damp will not be a problem. However, note that especially in the case of frames and headstocks, the tightening process must be methodical; working around several times; tightening gently to avoid distortion. Note that ringing with a loose frame or gear will not help the life of the installation besides making ringing difficult and posing possible safety risks.

You can seek advice on any of the above from a bell hanger or a member of this committee (via tbchairman@odg.org.uk ). There is also material online https://odg.org.uk/info/towers-and-belfries/  and in the text books.”
